Behaviors

Overview:

I was tasked during the time of this project to create personas and support two other teams. This particular example comes from my time working on a redesign of fax, a feature heavily used by a large set of specialites and roles in our Electronic Medical Assistant software along side a Jr. UX Designer. (The thoughts in this case study are my own and does not necessarily reflect the views of Modernizing Medicine.)

Problem/Challenge:

The fax feature of EMR is a feature used heavily and by a variety of specialites and roles. The current fax feature was bulky, hard to use and not consistant with desktop. After our research, we would have to redefine the problem and align with UX team and business.

Approach:

My colleague and I began this project with research. We dove deep into Google Analytics, interviews, user testing current experience, reviewing comments, Customer support tickets, mapping current user flow, storyboard, ect.

We wanted to move fast and get feedback quickly so our next step was to iderate, test and get feedback using invision, eye tracking, subject mater experts, axure, ect.

Test.Collaborate.Iterate:

We began to create wireframes and task flows individually then brought our ideas to the design room to share, discus and collaborate.  Shortly after that we started to put designs in front of user and educators for feedback.

Moving along to prototype

After our findings, we moved into high fidelity mockups and placed our prototype in Invision and created some more advance prototypes in Axure. Along this journey we where able to have our dedicated iOS developer assist us through the technical challenges. We then conducted several eye tracking studies with several doctors, medical assistants and educators from a variety of specialities like ENT, Derm and Gastroenterology.

Results

Based on our results, we where able to analyze fixation points and gazes with our UX Manager who is an industry expert. Not only did we speed up the process for users and save users money  we also had a blast working collaboratively on this project. I had left the organization shortly after but my colleague was able to lead the efforts for this project.

Using Tobbi eye tracking software to analyze the gaze and fixation along with moderated data to better understand behavior and motives. We tested with Doctors, medication assistants and software educators.

We learned how to analyze the data thanks to our UX manager who happens to be a eye tracking professional and has written a book on the topic such as “Eye Tracking in User experience Design”. Thank you Andrew for the education.

Team work

Even though the project was worked on and executed by two people, it was really a team effort. Between the UX team and the rest of the subject mater experts on staff, we where able to provide a solution that was not only user centered, but leveraged the experience and expertise of others.

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.
